Creating Depth in Cinematography: Foreground, Midground, Background
Flat compositions are the hallmark of amateur footage. Professional cinematography creates depth — the illusion of three dimensions on a two-dimensional screen. Here’s how to build layered, deep compositions.
The Three Layers
Foreground: Elements closest to the camera. Often slightly out of focus. Creates a sense of looking into the scene rather than at it.
Midground: Where your subject lives. The focal point of the composition.
Background: The environment behind your subject. Sets context and mood.
A shot using all three layers feels immersive. A shot with only a subject against a blank wall feels like a mugshot.
Foreground Techniques
- Shoot through objects: plants, doorframes, crowd shoulders, window bars
- Place practical lights in the foreground (slightly blurred lamp = beautiful bokeh)
- Use environmental elements: branches, fences, furniture edges
- Position other characters in the foreground (over-the-shoulder is a foreground technique)
Even a slightly blurred edge of a wall on one side of the frame adds enormous depth.
Midground: Subject Staging
Place your subject at a distance from both the camera and the background. The more separation you create between layers, the more depth the image has.
Blocking for depth: Stage actors at different distances from camera. One character at 6 feet, another at 12 feet, with a background element at 30 feet — three distinct planes of depth.
Background Techniques
- Practical lights create bokeh and visual interest
- Movement in the background (extras walking, traffic, wind) adds life
- Contrasting tones (bright subject against dark background or vice versa) create separation
- Environmental storytelling: what’s in the background tells us about the world
Depth Without Expensive Gear
You don’t need a fast lens or full-frame camera:
- Shoot through things (free)
- Add practical lights in background (a string of lights costs $5)
- Stage actors at different distances (free)
- Use longer focal lengths (compression adds apparent depth)
- Separate subject from background with light (one lamp is enough)
