A good workflow means less time managing logistics and more time creating. Here’s how to build an efficient filmmaker workflow with apps.

The Workflow Stages

1. Concept & Writing

Tool: WriterSolo or Highland (free) Write your screenplay in proper format. Export to PDF for sharing.

2. Planning

Tools: Google Sheets + ShotLister Break your script into scenes. Create your shot list. Build your schedule. Share with your team.

3. Location & Lighting

Tool: Sun Seeker ($10) Plan natural lighting angles for each location and time of day.

4. On Set

Tools: FrameCoach + Blackmagic Camera FrameCoach coaches camera decisions. Blackmagic Camera gives you manual control. Together they cover the technical side so you can focus on directing.

5. Data Management

Tool: Your file naming system Name files consistently: ProjectName_Scene01_Take03_CamA.mov. Back up to two drives immediately after each shoot day.

6. Editing

Tool: DaVinci Resolve (free) Import, organize into bins by scene, assemble → rough → fine cut.

7. Color & Sound

Tool: DaVinci Resolve (free) Grade in the Color page. Mix in Fairlight. One app for everything.

8. Export & Delivery

Tool: DaVinci Resolve + Handbrake Export master file from Resolve. Use Handbrake for web-optimized versions.

9. Distribution

Tools: YouTube + FilmFreeway Upload to YouTube/Vimeo. Submit to festivals.

The Key Principle

Fewer tools, mastered deeply, beats many tools used superficially. Pick one tool per stage and learn it well.
