  • 90-95 IRE (90-95%): Very bright highlights, but still with detail. A bright cloud in the sky, a reflective object. You’re getting close to clipping here.
  • 100 IRE (100%): Absolute digital white. Anything at this point is pure white with no detail. You want to avoid sustained information here unless it’s a small specular highlight (like a glint off metal) that you intentionally let clip.

Practical Tip: Always expose for your talent’s skin tone first. Find a spot on their face that is well-lit but not overexposed. Aim for 50-70 IRE for light skin tones and 30-50 IRE for darker skin tones. This ensures they look natural and properly exposed, even if other parts of the frame are brighter or darker.

Exposure Techniques Using a Waveform Monitor

Exposing to the Right (ETTR)
